San Foca, Puglia

San Foca is the nearest beach to our Agriturismo and, luckily for us, one of the most attractive in Salento.

Wine bars and restaurants liven up the tiny central square and its alleys are always full of young people and families. For those who like to get up early it is possible to buy some fresh fish directly from the ships berthed to the dock and then have a walk on the characteristic seafront, running along the entire village. Sometimes the sky is so clear that you can see the mountains of Albania –located right in front of Salento-.

While walking on the promenade you can appreciate white sandy beaches, ideal for children and for those who are not used to the deep water. Don’t worry, even the most skilled will have fun!

The sea is crystal clear and brushes rocks emerging from the deep. These rocks are the real characteristic of the landscape : “Sanfochiani” –people living in San Foca- gave some rocks a name, like “I brigantini”, “Lo scoglio dell’otto”, as if rocks were the authentic inhabitants of the sea.

You should totally stop at “Terrazza sul mare”, a free lido equipped for disabled : a real gem in San Foca we are really proud of!

In San Foca you will feel like home, so many poeople have been passing through these places and they have each left their mark on the other. Even the poor San Foca –the Saint from which the place takes its name- was extremely kind. According to hagiography he cooked for those he knew would be his tyrant. In addition to this, while they were sleeping he dug his own grave and then invited them to execute him. Maybe he has overstated a bit!

His statue is located in a tiny Church located right in front of an ancient tower, once used to sight pirates coming form Turkey. Currently, parish priest is a little bit unconventional, for this reason if you won’t find him in the Church have a look at the seaside : maybe he will be celebrating from a ship!

For those who are looking for some nightlife don’t miss “Mamanera” : an excellent lido during the day –located in San Basilio, in the north of San Foca– at night in turns into one of the most important stage for international Raggae music. Otherwise, if you are passionate about vintage or soul and rock’n roll music, you should totally go to the itinerant Tobia Lamare’s “El Sabatone”.

“La Notte di mare” is a festival set in San Foca every year around August the 20th : it is a big party with more than 10 stages all around the village and loads of people walking down the streets. And when you will be tired of crowdy places, jut come back to our Agriturismo, our donkey Pinuccia will be waiting for you!
